Elemental is a five-year (2025-2030) programme that takes matter (Earth, Water, Air, Fire, Aether and Wood) as a part point for a series of interconnected works that explores deep time and energetic transformation. Focusing on artists and creative practice that works at an elemental level, we are exploring what new aesthetic directions, processes and sensibilities might emerge from collective and durational inquiry.

Key partners are the Social Practice Lab, Winchester School of Art and the cultural venue Kulturhus Björkboda’s (KUBU), which is located on the island of Kemiönsaari/Kimitoön, in the Southwest of Finland. This location is part of the UNESCO Archipelago Sea Biosphere Reserve. With the 2025 summer exhibition programme, The Garden and The Hedge marking the first edition in this programme. Drawing on the island’s rich history of soil-based livelihoods from farming to mining. The summer programme showcases 35 individual art works, performances, workshops and interventions. Inviting reflection on soil health, boundaries, resilience, and our responsibilities to the living land.
